Rio Rancho Department of Public Safety

Our Department has been a member of STRCC and STREOC for many years. In 2003 the Department began the process of installing a Mobile Data Browser Program in all patrol units. DPS purchased 20 laptop computers in the 2003 budget, 32 additional laptop computers in the 2004 fiscal year budget and another 20 units budgeted, for a total of 72 computers. This gave each officer on the road a laptop computer in his unit. Because we had the laptops already installed in our patrol vehicles, TraCS was the next logical step so the Rio Rancho Dept. of Public Safety became a member of the TraCS pilot project.

In October 2003 DPS hosted a demonstration of the TraCS electronic citation for approximately 35 of our officers and officers from a few other agencies. We had approximately 8 computers set up in the room so the officers were able to get hands-on experience with the citation. The response from the officers was very favorable.

On Wednesday, October 12, 2005 TraCS software was installed on 10 laptop computers and on Thursday, October 13, 2005 training was held for the Rio Rancho DPS Officers.

Since the majority of the officers in the pilot work the weekday shift, it was decided that the officers would start using TraCS on Monday, October 17, 2005.

Our participation in this project has been challenging and we have learned from our mistakes. Our Traffic Division is currently using TraCS for all their citations and crash reports. Our future plans include expanding the use of TraCS to all our officers in the field.

Our ultimate goal is to share information between the State’s Highway Department, Law Enforcement Agencies, the Courts, and the Motor Vehicle Division. We look forward to the day when this becomes a reality.
