Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department

The Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Department began issuing electronic citations using TraCS on March 30, 2006. Some of the twelve deputies in the pilot program were reluctant to use the system at first; now all twelve cannot seem to function without it. Lt. Chris Smead of the department's Traffic Division recognized the initial lack of enthusiasm by some deputies and planned several enforcement projects. This allowed all the pilot deputies to work speed enforcement in a designated area and made it very easy for Lt. Smead to guide those deputies who took a little longer to grasp the concept. Within a few days, the department saw an overwhelming increase in traffic citations, but motorists were not being held for lengthy periods of time as before.

After becoming comfortable with the Uniform Traffic Citation, Doña Ana County Sheriff’s Deputies were ready for more forms. The Uniform Crash Report and all DWI related forms were added into their TraCS program and away they went! Now the deputies are asking how long it will be until all state and department forms will be available in TraCS. Understandably, they prefer not to handwrite forms multiple times since they know they can type individual information only once. Of course the remainder of the department is asking how long it will be until they can begin using TraCS.
